FORT MCKAVETT
Fort McKavett was the first permanent settlement in Menard County. It was founded by government troops in 1853. The fort was first established at Fort Territ but as it was surrounded by hills, the troops were afraid the Indians would slip up on them, so it was moved to Fort McKavett.
Fort McKavett is located twenty-two miles above Menard in a stock-raising region. Most of the old rock buildings have fallen down, but the few that remain are used for business houses. It is a thriving little village and draws a large amount of trading from ranchmen and farmers.
